Turkeys are for eating – not for making friends!

Since Thanksgiving is right around the corner, I couldn’t resist using the old “Turkeys and Eagles” comparison. What can I say? I am a cheeseball 🙂

We’ve all heard the comparison used in so many ways in our lives (spiritual, financial, behavioral, business, fitness, etc.) and it is easy for us to skip right past a blog like this and say, “I know, I know, heard it, done it, over it” but the fact still remains that there are JEWELS in this comparison that we all need to be reminded of from time to time. There wouldn’t be so much hoopla about this subject everywhere you look if it wasn’t a FUNDAMENTAL life principal.

So who is influencing you?

Your friends and people you surround yourself with influence your attitudes, opinions and the way you handle situations.

Proverbs 13:20
He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harms.

Proverbs 27:17
As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

1Cor 15:33
Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

As my husband is an avid sports fan – I can put it this way… What happens if you play ball on a good team? A bad team? Of course you play to the level of those around you.

Your initial impression might be there are no undesirable relationships in your life, but the fact of the matter is, for some people the only thing standing between them and success is the people with whom they associate.

Did you know this principal is even true when it comes to income?
Is your income similar to your friends? Why? Our good friends Tom Fulmer and Rik Harvin from Space Coast Entrepreneurs are always saying that your income in the next five years is going to be the average income of your five closest friends. Why don’t you take some time to think about the five people that you spend the most time with (friends, family members, business people, etc.) and write down their annual income (or what you think it is) and then average those. What is your income in correlation to the average of theirs? Similar? Below? What does this activity tell you about your friends’ influence? Do they challenge you enough? Do you challenge them?

I encourage you to (yes, again… and then again and again) examine the people around you – your family, friends, acquaintances and the people with whom you work, determine the effect they are having on you, and then decide whether or not these relationships are supporting and expanding your ability to create the desired results in your life. For some people in our lives, the answer is clearly “yes”. But if you’re not sure, then it’s time to take a closer look at these relationships.

We all know people in our lives with the “pity party” mentality and the “victim mentality” who are always moaning and complaining about their circumstances, never changing their actions, and blaming everyone else for why they don’t like their lives. Of course these types of people drag you down and suck the life out of you. They focus on the negative and don’t see the opportunities out there or focus on things they CAN do. You need to shift the time you spend with negative influences over to spending more time with people who are a positive influence on you and your future.

If it is not possible, or too awkward, to discontinue relationships with bad influences, then at least minimize it, but don’t be mean, and don’t reject them as people. You can use your time with them to affect them for the better! When you DO spend time with these people, do your best to direct the conversation – have them talk about things that they love, so that you can experience the positive side of them – you may even become their success model!

We should all strive to create an environment where we can flourish. When we surround ourselves with positive, intelligent, and energetic people, we feel that positive energy; we find that we are able to achieve those goals that we set out to and we are able to rely on our friends to support us and guide us through decisions. A few places we found great people to surround ourselves with people are Space Coast Entrepreneurs, East Coast Christian Center and Get Social Brevard. When we surround ourselves with these people who have the same goals and attitudes, we are creating a positive, growth-creating environment. So get out there and find a place for yourself!

When we go the next step and surround ourselves with people who have what we want, we are able to draw from their knowledge and wisdom, and are able to see, first hand, those things that are important to us in action, including relationships, spiritual matters, business, fitness, and finances.

Get involved in your community and find a growth-creating environment!

We want to hear from you. Where do you find great people? Do you have any bad influences that this blog made you think about changing? Do you struggle with this concept? Tell us YOUR stories!
